I have three risk factors: Family history, my mother and grandmother had hypertension. My brother has hypertension. I am also obese, but not sedentary, enjoying frequent bike rides year-round. I entered the high-risk age group only recently. I have been monitoring my blood pressure since 1986. During my long bike rides, I would often stop at Longs, Lucky, Safeway, etc. to check my blood pressure. On one occasion my BP was a very odd 239/57. On 4/5/2008 at 7 PM it was a scary 239/99.

I have hypertension and it led to kidney failure. I am now on dialysis, I was twenty eight when it was discovered. Now i’m not fear mongering but if you have regular head aches get checked out, you might have hypertension. I wasn’t out of shape, I played hockey in the winter and raced bicycles in the summer. I had zero risk factors, do your self a favour just go for check ups periodically, your doctor will probably never find anything, but if he does maybe it won’t be too late.

Please pay attention and get checked. My mom was diagnosed last year and she is on limited time now, she has Idiopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension
