Los Angeles Councilmember Herb Wesson Trains with Tarik Tyler to Kick Off Obstacle Course at Saturday’s Community Health Festival
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) April 21, 2010
Los Angeles Councilmember Herb Wesson will participate in a fitness training session tomorrow, Thursday April 22nd, with trainer Tarik Tyler in preparation for his kick-off of the family impediment course at the Foundation for Second Chances (FFSC) 4th annual “A Taste of Health & Fitness” festival which takes place on Saturday, April 24th. Thursday’s training session will take place at Ultrabody Fitness located at 828 North La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90038.
“We’re very excited that Councilmember Wesson will lead community members in the family impediment course,” stated Tyler who designed the course. “During Thursday’s workout, I plan to discuss the Councilmember’s individualized fitness goals with him and to wage him with cardiovascular training, flexibility exercises and strength and agility drills that will help him both meet these goals and prepare for Saturday’s course,” he said. The course will include a 25-yard dash, over-and-under hurdles, a basketball shoot, football throw and other challenges. Participation in the course is free along with health seminars, exhibits, an organic farmer’s market and other festival activities.
Fresh off his appearance on ABC TV’s “Shaq’s Huge Challenge,” Tyler decided to become more involved with the issue of childhood blubber and founded Bring Back Gym which is dedicated to providing a fun fitness environment to unfit and fat children. The organization offers exercise and nutrition programs designed to improve health and to build self esteem, confidence and leadership skills among youth.
Wesson, who exercises regularly, hopes his involvement in the clean will inspire people of all ages to take ownership of their individualized health and fitness. “April is National Minority Health Month and fittingly, FFSC’s annual health festival provides an opportunity for our community to access optimal health care while also continuing to raise awareness that health disparities preserve and must be addressed,” he said. Wesson, who represents Los Angeles Council District 10, recently spearheaded a 24 percent increase in HIV testing funds by the Los Angeles City Council.
Tired of seeing friends and community members suffer due to the shortage of readily acquirable health services, Melissa M. Wyatt, FFSC Founder and CEO, galvanized a core group of community-based organizations and volunteers to coordinate the annual health festival “Our event takes place in a high-needs area where limited financial resources, poor nutrition, and a demand of access to information and healthcare make it challenging for many families to address their health needs,” she said. ”This festival will bring programs and services directly to people who are most in need.”
“A Taste of Health & Fitness,” takes place Saturday, April 24th at Rancho Cienega Park in South Los Angeles from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and includes a 5K Run/Walk, family impediment course, seminars, exhibits, an organic farmer’s market and other activities. Councilmember Herb Wesson, joined by California Speaker Emeritus Karenic Bass, Milken Family Foundation Board Trustee Rev. Roosevelt “Rosey” Grier and other community leaders will conduct opening remarks at 11:00 a.m. followed by a kick-off the impediment course led by Wesson.
The first 100 people to register for the 5K Walk/Run will receive a free fitness kit donated by Advantage Fitness Products which includes a yoga mat, yoga ball, workout bands and other items. Autographed duplicates of Tyrese Gibson’s Mayhem #1 comic and Meltdown Comic’s Fallout Boy will be awarded to the first 200 children to arrive at the fair.
Sponsored by the Milken Family Foundation, the festival is being hosted in association with Bring Back Gym, Brotherhood Crusade, West Adams Neighborhood Council and the 10th District Early Childhood, Youth and Senior Commission. FFSC is a community based organization which utilizes mentoring, health, hands-on education and community service to maximize the potential of youth.
